Economy News
4 Amid severe opposition, the government called a Group of Ministers'
(GoM) meeting on Friday to review the decision to ban cotton export
barely a day after it was effected.  (BS)
4 Industry body Assocham urged the government not to increase excise duty
and service tax from their current level of 10.3 per cent. (ET)
4 Days before the Budget, the railways have effected major changes in
freight slabs, which would result in a 20-25 per cent rate increase over the
same distance. Also, by abolishing the classification for fertilisers and food
grains and bringing them under a higher slab, the railways have raised
freight rates for these commodities. (BS)
4 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured industry that the Centre is
making renewed efforts to open up foreign direct investment in multibrand retail, despite Uttar Pradesh (UP) election results where the

4 L&T jumps into Hexaware race to reboot Infotech. It has roped in Citibank
as advisor deal to help firm break into the $1-billion tech club. (BS)
4 Hero MotoCorp is expected to announce plans to set up its fourth plant
in Gujarat in March itself, even as talks speed up for a fifth facility likely at
Karnataka. Additional capacity would help the two-wheeler market
leader to meet its $1 billion export target by 2020 (BL)
4 Hotel Leelaventures, which had reported a loss for the December
quarter, has been referred to the corporate debt restructuring (CDR) cell
to recast debt of Rs 40 bn. The company's interest cost went up five times
to Rs 1.11 bn in the third quarter ended December 2011, from Rs 200 mn
during the same period of the previous year. (BS)
4 Tulip Telecom,  which owns the third largest data centre globally, plans
to rope in an investor for its data centre and is willing to shed between 10
per cent and 25 per cent stake in the centre. (BL)
4 The Telecom tribunal on Tuesday gave Reliance Infratel (RInfra) time
till March 14 to file a rejoinder to Etisalat DB's reply in the Rs 12 bn
dispute between the two firms. (BS)
4 Honeywell Technology Solutions, the R&D arm of global technology
major Honeywell, is setting up a new centre in Bangalore. The company
has received approval from the Karnataka government for setting up the
facility which entails an investment of Rs 4.02 bn. (BS)
