Tea
ƒ Domestic realisations to improve in coming year, CY12
Tea production in India in CY11 stood at 988.3 million kg (mkg)
(expected: ~1000 mkg) against 966.4  mkg in CY10, an increase of
almost 2.3%. Consumption during the period increased at a higher rate
of ~3.5%. With the dry weather in February-March 2012, domestic
production is expected to marginally decline in 2012. Simultaneously,
production in Kenya is likely to remain similar to 2011 levels. We believe
export demand for Indian tea would increase in 2012 and would push
Indian tea prices by ~10-12%. In the January-March quarter, we expect
tea companies to post higher losses due to wage increase in Assam and
West Bengal by ~| 7/kg, which is substantially higher than regular
increase of | 2.5-3.5/kg

Tea
􀂃 Global supplies improving
Tea production in Kenya, which is the largest tea exporter in the world,
has witnessed 8% decline to 336 million kg (Jan-Nov 2011) in tea
production in 2011, which resulted in higher global tea prices and high
export prices for Indian companies. Production in Kenya has started
improving from September 2011. We believe production in 2012 would
increase to 390 million kg, which would keep the tea prices at ~ US $ 3
per kg.
􀂃 Higher domestic production lead to strong volume growth
Tea production in India would increase to above 1000 million kg in 2011,
higher than 966 million kg in 2010 led by the normal monsoon in North
India. Tea production during January-October 2011 has been 847 million
kg, 4% higher than 813 million kg in January-October 2010. Higher
production in the current year has resulted in strong volume growth for
most of the Indian tea companies. Simultaneously high export
realisations would result in robust earning growth in Q3FY12.

Tea
ƒ High export realisations due to global shortage
Kenya’s tea production has declined  by 16.3% to 178.1 million kg in
January-June 2011 from 213 million kg in January-June 2012.
Simultaneously, tea production in Sri Lanka has remained flat at 220
million kg compared to 222 million  kg in 2010. This has resulted in
higher global tea prices and higher exports realisations for Indian
companies. Tea realisation in North India is higher by ~10%, which
could help in higher earnings for the North India based companies. We
believe tea prices will remain high for the current financial year. Export
in North India during the same period has been 87 million kg with the
average realisations of | 185.0 per compared to 85.5 million kg with
average realisations of | 163 per kg in 2010.
ƒ Domestic production to increase to above 1000 million kg
Tea production in India would increase to above 1000 million kg in 2011,
higher than 966 million kg in 2010 led by the normal monsoon in North
India. Tea production during January-July 2011 has been 491 million kg,
6% higher than 462 million kg in  January-July 2010. However, higher
export demand for Indian tea in European countries due to lower
production in the African region has resulted in higher realisations.
ƒ North India based companies to benefit from export
McLeod Russell and Jayshree Tea, based in West Bengal and Assam,
are the biggest beneficiaries of higher exports prices. North India based
companies are known for high quality tea and demand for this tea
mainly comes from European countries. We believe North India based
companies would witness both volumes and realisations growth.

Company specific view
Company Remarks

The company is likely to witness robust earnings led by elevated rubber prices and
improvement in export realisations of tea. We expect the company to sell 5.2 million
kg of tea with average realisations of | 86 per kg and 2499 tonnes of rubber with the
average realisations of | 210 per kg
Jayshree Tea We expect the company to sell 11.9 million kg with average realisations of | 144 per
kg. However, with increase in wages by ~| 3 per kg, margins are likely to come
down to 22.7% from 25.2% in Q2FY11. We expect higher export realisations in Q3
could results in improvement in margins
McLeod Russel We expect the company to sell 24.9 million kg of tea with average realisation of |166
per kg in India and 6.3 million kg with average realisations of | 88 per kg in overseas
subsidiary. However, margins will witness some moderation due to 23% increase in
employee cost

Tea
􀂃 Increasing global prices to improve export realisations
Tea production in Kenya has declined by 21.1% during the first four
months of 2011. Simultaneously, flat production in Sri Lanka of
139.7 million kg (138.1 in the corresponding period), has resulted in
~10-12% increase in global tea prices. Tea prices in Kenya are
prevailing at US$3.2 per kg. Low export availability from Kenya and
other African countries would divert export demand to India. Higher
global prices would help Indian companies to export greater
quantity at a higher price. In the Q1FY12, we believe companies will
sell a similar quantity as June 2010. However, realisations would be
strong. We believe North India based tea companies would benefit
from stronger tea prices as demand for higher quality tea remains
strong in the UK and other European countries.
􀂃 Domestic production to increase marginally
Tea production in India would remain in the range of 980-1000
million kg (mkg) in 2011. Limited area under tea cultivation and very
slow pace of increase in yields has capped the production at ~980
million kg in the last five years. We believe sustainable growth of
~3% in consumption and increasing export demand would result in
higher realisations for the companies. In Q1FY12, domestic prices
would remain steady on the back of export demand. Exports from
India are likely to increase above ~200 million kg, which would keep
domestic tea prices above ~| 150 per kg.
􀂃 McLeod to benefit from export
McLeod Russell, being the largest bulk producer in the country,
would benefit the most from higher prices. We believe consolidation
of acquired subsidiaries in Africa and Vietnam would help increase
volumes by ~10 million kg in 2011. This would result in higher
revenue growth and earnings for the company.

We expect rubber & tea sales volumes to be lower YoY at 2.3 mkg & ~4.3 mkg,
respectively. However, realisations would be higher at ~| 77/kg for tea & ~| 210/kg
for rubber. Led by higher realisations, we expect margins to improve to 4.6% (0.2% in
Q1FY11) and bottomline to be back to black at ~| 4 crore
Jayshree
Tea
Jayshree Tea would be selling 3.6 mkg of tea with average realisations of | 132 per kg
compared to 3.1 mkg with | 130 per kg realisations in Q1FY11. With the increase in
volumes and increase in realisations, margins for the company will improve to ~21%
from ~9.6% in Q1FY11
McLeod
Russel
On a standalone basis, the company is likely to sell 8.9 mkg of tea with average
realisations of | 152.0 per kg as against 8.7 mkg of volumes with average realisations
of 140 per kg in Q1FY11. The company would be selling 5.2 mkg of tea (African
subsidiaries) at an avg realisation of | 81/kg

Tea
􀂃 Lower production, higher realisation to augur well for industry
Tea production in India has remained stagnant in the range of ~960-
980 million kg (2006-10) and is likely to remain at ~980-1000 million
kg in 2011 (mere increase of 2-3%). In Q4FY11, tea companies are
likely to post better results compare to Q4FY10 with the losses
contained due to higher realizations for the low quality or dust tea,
which is being traded between Jan-Mar. We believe tea prices will
remain buoyant in 2011 on the back of high export demand for
Indian tea. This has been reflected by the first trades (starts with the
5th April, 2011) as quality tea fetched 29% higher prices while the
average quality rose by 15%. Average crush, tear and curl (CTC) tea
garnered | 150-160 per kg against | 130-140 per kg in Q4FY10.

Tea - ƒ Lower production, higher realisation to augur well for industry
The overall production from January-November, 2010 fell by 13.23
million kg (mkg) to 907.65 mkg (682.71 mkg in the north and 224.94
mkg in the south) leading to a surge in prices by ~| 15 per kg. Thus,
in spite of a decline in volumes, higher realisation would augur well
for the companies that could witness almost a 10% increase in
revenues in FY11. In Q3FY11E, we expect revenues to be up ~10%
YoY and ~5% QoQ though the higher employee cost would pull
down the margins by around 4% YoY and 14% QoQ.

􀃂 Tea (Uptrend in prices to continue) Positive
With the total tea production in the country estimated to be ~965 million kg
in CY11 (lower by ~20 million kg compared to CY10), we believe tea prices
will remain firm during the year with volumes taking a setback. Also, a
higher production of ~100 million kg in Kenya and Sri Lanka would
adversely impact the exports. However, companies like McLeod Russel and
Jayshree Tea would witness volume growth led by their acquisitions in
Africa and Asia.
