  • First season of the Indian Super League (ISL) will last 70 days with 61 matches between 8 teams.
  • Each team has a marquee (international) player, which is likely to generate interest. ISL will be shown in 8 channels in 5 languages in India; 23 languages across 5 continents.
  • DEN Networks, which owns the Delhi franchise, believes that ISL offers  a strong platform to market its services. As per our calculation, DEN Networks is likely to generate revenues from central pool (INR59mn), team sponsorship (INR80mn), gate receipts (~INR40mn), merchandising and other (INR10mn) and possible prize money.
  • On the cost front, in our view, DEN Networks is likely to incur franchise cost (~INR160mn), players/staff cost (INR200mn), administrative, travelling, promotion and marketing cost (INR120mn).
  • We expect DEN Networks and other franchisees to report losses in the range of ~INR200-290mn each in the first year.
  • On launch day, ISL had 74.7mn viewers (~12x of FIFA World Cup 2014) and ~15% higher than Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).
  • Being the first season, we do not foresee meaningful impact on viewership of GECs/multiplexes.
  • Football clubs like Mahindra United, Mohammedan Sporting and JCT Football have been disbanded. ISL may not share the same fate as it is backed by Reliance (India’s largest business enterprise), IMG Worldwide (a global sports, fashion and media company), Star India (India's biggest broadcaster) and All India Football Federation (AIFF).
  • Star India dominates sports broadcasting in Indian market. After the success of the Pro Kabaddi League, we expect ISL’s success to further consolidate its domination in sports.
  • 4 out of 8 teams are backed by Indian cricket stalwarts (both ex and current), which will further help in promoting and marketing ISL.
  • Currently, India stands 158 in FIFA ranking. With ISL coming in, we expect its ranking to improve over the long term!
