Sensex registered excellent performance on Friday, trimming major loss for the week as it had shed nearly 500 points in the previous three sessions. Sensex and Nifty gained more than 2% each supported by strong global cues and the latter closed above 5300. Buying was seen in metal, capital goods, financials, consumer durables and realty stocks.
The Sensex closed at 17503, up 357 points, while the Nifty jumped 113 points to end the day at 5333.
Major gainers were Jindal Steel & Power (6.83%), Tata Steel (6.74%), I C I C I Bank (6.22%), Larsen & Toubro (5.27%), Sterlite Industries (India) (4.66%), and Housing Development Finance Corporation (4.25%).
Major losers were Wipro (1.63%), I T C (0.79%), Infosys Technologies (0.69%), Hindustan Unilever (0.59%), G A I L (India) (0.34%), and Tata Power Company (0.23%).
The Metal index jumped 4.69%. Major gainers were Jindal Steel & Power (6.83%), Bhushan Steel (3.91%), Hindustan Zinc (3.41%), Coal India (2.45%) and Hindalco Industries (2.44%).
The Capital Goods index was up 3.75%. Major gainers were Alstom Projects India (7.02%), A B B (2.58%), BEML (1.25%), Bharat Electronics (1.06%) and A I A Engineering (0.8%).
The Bankex gained 3.66%. Major gainers were Canara Bank (4.91%), Bank Of India (4.42%), Federal Bank (3.49%), Bank Of Baroda (2.52%) and H D F C Bank (1.47%).
The FMCG index was down 0.12%. Major losers were Dabur India (1.11%), I T C (0.79%), Godrej Consumer Products (0.74%) and Hindustan Unilever (0.59%).
Major gainers in the mid-cap space were CESC (8.42%), IRB Infra (7.14%), Aban Offshore (6.19%), Britannia Industries (4.39%), Ashok Leyland (4.13%), Bata India (3.65%), Kalpataru Power (3.48%) and ABG Shipyard (3.09%).
Major gainers among small caps were 3I Infotech (5.00%), DEN Network (4.65%), Gammon Infra ( 4.15%), Balrampur Chini (3.95%), Geodesic (3.80%) Everest Kanto (3.84%), Essel Propack (3.01%) and GTL Infra (2.85%).
Globally, Asian indices ended on a positive note while European indices were trading mixed.
