Assembly elections results:
Advantage Congress
Assembly elections- not very important this time
The current batch of assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamilnadu, Kerala,
Assam and Pondicherry were not of a great importance from market perspective.
This is mainly because the main opposition party, the Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) is absent in these states. Secondly, the good thing from the elections is that
it doesn’t change the status quo as far as the central government is concerned.
While the ruling coalition at the center, Congress-led UPA managed to win
majority in 3 states (West Bengal, Kerala and Assam), AIADMK led coalition
secured majority in the state of Tamilnadu and Union Territory Puducherry.
Results on expected lines: bitter-sweet victory for Congress
Results of the elections were largely on expected lines as predicted by the exit
polls. However, the UPA would be disappointed with the slim margin of victory in
Kerala and the heavy margin of defeat in Tamilnadu. On the other hand it would
be reassured with the victory margin of its alliance in West Bengal.
Left parties out of power
With the loss in West Bengal and Kerala, Left parties are out of power from all
major state for the first time in 34 years. However, this may not have any
significant impact on the policies of central government due to the already
reduced influence of left parties at the center.
Corruption issues had an impact… but limited to Tamilnadu
These elections were fought on the backdrop of several corruption scandals.
These had some impact on the assembly elections especially in the state of
Tamilnadu where the members of the ruling DMK are embroiled in the 2G scam.
However, since the assembly elections are fought more on the local issues, it had
a very limited impact in other states
