Dollar weakness has boosted near-term sentiment,
but in our view China’s efforts to curb capacity
along with Asia’s structural demand growth for
commodities will underpin sector fundamentals.
With this positive backdrop, the inaugural HSBC
Commodities Conference in Singapore from 1-2
November will provide a great opportunity for
both investors and companies to exchange views
and discuss the key issues facing commodities
markets.

Coal: Amongst the Chinese coal majors, China
Coal and Yanzhou Coal will be in attendance at
the conference, while the China tour will feature a
management briefing with Shenhua (1088 HK).
The conference will also host global coal players
such as Peabody Energy of the US and
Indonesia’s Adaro Energy as well as emerging
Mongolian companies (Mongolia Energy,
SouthGobi and Winsway).
Base Metals: Across the base metals spectrum,
we’ll be hosting China’s Jiangxi Copper, India’s
NALCO, Russia’s UC Rusal and Canadian miner
First Quantum, along with Australian nickel pureplay
Western Areas and Asia-Pac copper producer
CST Mining. In addition, a visit to Chalco in
Beijing has been arranged on our China tour.
Steel, Iron Ore & others: Along with the China
national steel champion Baosteel, other
companies that will be at the conference include
Chinese iron ore producer China VTM, South
African diversified miner African Rainbow and
Atlas Mining from the Philippines. A highlight of
the China tour is a first-hand look at the Baosteel
operations in Shanghai.
Gold and Precious Metals: Global gold producers
such as Barrick and Eldorado will be in attendance,
along with silver streamer Silver Wheaton and
emerging Asian gold play G-Resources.
