Greece snap election was held on 25th January. The Syriza party won 149 of the 300 seats in the Greece parliament with the party leader; Alexis Tsipras who became the prime minister.
Syriza made following promises in campaigns:
- Basically, Syriza branded itself as the anti-austerity party. Syriza promised an end to austerity measures. It has also pledged to re-negotiate the terms of the multiple bailouts Greece has received in the past few years with the hope to delay debt repayments or even have the some of the debt written off.
- They have also promised to renegotiate Greece`s debt agreements, indicating that they will be looking at writing off 1/3rd of Greece`s debt (more than Euro 300 bn of debt).
- The party wants as much Greek government debt as possible to be written off; this debt is mainly held by German and French banks.
- Syriza also wants to boost wages & pensions in Greece and ramp up public spending to provide benefits to the poor.
