On Wednesday, the Indian equity market closed higher on back of short covering and positive open European markets. Sensex and Nifty gained more than 1.5% each and the latter closed above 5350. All sectors closed in the green, major gainers being capital goods, realty, financial, power, IT and auto stocks.
The Sensex closed at 17601, up 285 points, while the Nifty jumped 90 points to end the day at 5365.
Major gainers were Larsen & Toubro (4.46%), D L F (4.01%), Tata Steel (4.00%), Tata Consultancy Services (3.25%), I C I C I Bank (3.07%), and Bharti Airtel (3.00%).
Major losers were Hindalco Industries (1.01%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (0.35%), I T C (0.18%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.17%), and Hero Honda Motors (0.07%).
The Capital Goods index was up 3.59%. Major gainers were BEML (4.15%), A I A Engineering (3.29%), Alstom Projects India (2.75%), Bharat Electronics (1.6%) and A B B (0.67%).
The Realty index jumped 3.54%. Major gainers were Housing Development and Infrastructure (8.57%), Anant Raj Industries (4.84%), D L F (4.01%), Sunteck Realty (1.67%) and Godrej Properties (1.13%).
The Bankex gained 2.44%. Major gainers were Bank Of Baroda (2.96%), Bank Of India (2.8%), H D F C Bank (2.09%), Canara Bank (2.04%) and Federal Bank (1.45%).
The Power index was up 1.86%. Major gainers were Reliance Infrastructure (4.65%), Crompton Greaves (3.94%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.82%), Adani Power (2.03%) and A B B (0.67%).
Major gainers in the mid- cap space were BGR Energy (8.22%), Godrej Industries (7.62%), Alok Industries (3.54%), Aban Offshore (3.40%), Alstom Projects (3.34%), FAG Bearings (2.81%) and Indian Hotels (2.32%).
Major gainers among small caps were 3I Infotech (8.55%), ABG Infra (5.25%), Advanta India (5.17%), Balrampur Chini (5.00%), Bilcare (3.88%), EIH Associated (2.46%) and GTL Infra (1.19%).
Globally, Asian indices ended on a negative note while European indices were trading in the green
