After two decades at the helm of one of the largest Indian conglomerates, Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata on November 23, 2011 announced the name of his successor -- Cyrus P Mistry, who will have to fill some pretty big shoes from next December.

Born on Dec 28, 1937, Ratan Naval Tata joined the Tata Group in 1962 and has been its chairman since 1991. But before Ratan Tata, let's check out the big names of the men who shaped the Tata Group.

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata

Past Chairmen of the Group: Founded the Tata Group of companies in 1868.
Dorabji Tata
He started Tata Steel and Tata Power, which are still central to the group. He also provided the initial funding for the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the premier research institution based out of Bangalore.

Nowroji Saklatvala

Besides Cyrus Mistry, he has been the only other non-Tata to have become chairman of the Tata Group.

Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata

JRD Tata laid the foundation for much of the Tata Group as it is today, growing it from 14 businesses to 95. Flying was his passion and he started Tata Airlines, which was later nationalised as Air India.

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Tata Memorial Centre for Cancer Research, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) were set up when he was the trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.
