FDI – progress stalling
The Committee of Secretaries had approved FDI in multi brand retail in late July with some newsflow in
subsequent weeks around the accompanying riders
Since then progress seems to have stalled with no updates on the proposal being finalised
As per recent media aricles, the Cabinet has not yet considered the proposal and is unlikely to do so before
April 2012. The delay is reportedly driven by a lack of political will
This is the first negative news on the FDI proposal in the past few months and may signal a shift in momentum
In the meantime, opposition to FDI from traditional retail trade bodies and some political parties has continues
Metro Cash & Carry goes more regional to widen presence (BL)
Metro Cash & Carry is filling its shelves with more local and regional brands as it tries to expand its presence to
a nationwide footprint
In its current distribution network, large manufacturers provide 80 per cent of the products to Metro, but the
wholesaler is now enhancing the width of partners it sources from to include more small local manufacturers
Metro Cash & Carry which has seven distribution centres in India offers around 18,000 products and about 90
per cent of the products on the shelves are sourced from Indian manufacturers and suppliers.
Madura Lifestyle & Garments targeting growth in Van Huesen (BS)
Madura Fashion & Lifestyle is targeting a turnover of Rs 11bn from its premium apparel brand Van Heusen by
FY13 on the back of retail expansion across India, including small cities and towns
The brand is currently sold at 135 exclusive outlets with another 60 planned
The brand had a turnover of Rs6.5bn in FY11 and expects 8.5bn in FY12 and 11bn in FY13



Yum! Brands plans to scale up India operations (BS)
Yum! Brands Inc, the owner of the KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants, expects its Indian operations to be around
US$1bn by 2015
With plans to open a total of 1,000 outlets across brands in India by then and invest US$100m scaling up
The company currently operates close to 400 restaurants in India, mostly under KFC and Pizza Hut brands
McDonalds India to start listing calorie count (ET)

India is among the early adopters in the company’s health move
Other fast food companies in India are not adopting such measures at this stage
Lotto planning to scale up in India (IndiaRetailing)

as well as new markets to improve visibility for the brand
The company operates in India through Sports Lifestyle, its exclusive licensee for the country
Along with single-brand stores, the company has established a successful presence in more than 180 shop-inshops,
utilizing large multi-brand outlets
Saree retailer Nalli Silks plans to scale up in tier II cities (BL)
Nalli Silks plans to invest Rs1-1.5bn over two years on its retail expansion, with a focus on tier 2 cities which
account for a chunk of its wedding sales.
The brand currently operates 24 stores across major metros and has a turnover of ~Rs5.5bn
Apart from the traditional ‘Nalli’ format, the retailer also operates three ‘Nalli Next’ stores which is focused on
working women
