FY12 trade deficit at ~USD185bn is very elevated and is a cause of concern. Large energy imports, sharp rise in gold/silver imports and moderation in exports (on slowing external demand) were key factors behind the sharp widening. Going ahead, trade should benefit from sharp depreciation in INR, both on nominal and REER basis, while expected moderation in gold imports should also aid significantly. However, since external demand is unlikely to be robust and trend in crude prices remains unfavourable, trade deficit could still remain at elevated level.
