Auto sales numbers - August 2011
Maruti Suzuki (Maruti)
Maruti reported marginally better than expected volume number for August 2011 despite
the disruption in production at Manesar plant. However, the company reported 12.7% yoy
decline in total volumes to 91,442 units led by continued weakness in domestic market
and high base effect of last year. While, domestic volumes declined by 16.8% yoy to
77,086 units, exports volume increased by 18.5% yoy. The decline in the domestic
performance can be attributed to substantial slowdown in the mini and compact segment,
where sales declined by 18.3% and 26.9% yoy, respectively. The disruption in production
at company's Manesar plant restricted the sales to a certain extent during the month.
Tata Motors (TML)
TML reported 3% yoy decline in total volumes during August 2011 on account of 34% yoy
decline in volumes in the passenger vehicle segment. However, commercial vehicles (CV)
segment posted better-than-expected 21% yoy growth to 43,045 units. Performance in the
CV segment was led by an impressive 27% yoy growth in LCV sales, while M&HCV sales
staged a recovery, recording a healthy 12% yoy growth during August 2011. PV sales for
TML continue to disappoint as domestic demand remains sluggish. While, Nano dispatches
plunged 85% yoy to 1,202 units, Indica and Indigo sales declined by 4% and 24% yoy,
respectively. During the month, production at the Sanand plant was shut for about a
fortnight for maintenance purpose and to rationalise and align inventory levels.
Hero Honda (HH)
HH reported slightly better than expected 18.6% yoy growth in monthly volumes to
503,654 units led by robust performance across all the product segments. Refreshed
product ranges, new product launches and innovative branding and marketing initiatives
continue to drive the performance on the volume front.
TVS Motor (TVS)
TVS reported an in-line 14% yoy growth in total volumes to 194,898 units led by strong
growth across all its segments and backed by sustained momentum in the domestic sales.
While, total two-wheeler volumes increased 14% yoy, three-wheeler sales jumped 30% yoy.
Volume growth in the two-wheeler segment was led by 28% yoy growth in scooter sales to
52,253 units and 17% yoy growth in the motorcycle sales to 77,726 units. Exports too
