SC provides interim protection to Tata Motors’ rights on Singur land
The Supreme Court (SC) has provided interim protection to the rights of Tata Motors till the
outcome of the matters pending before the Calcutta High Court (HC) on the Singur land.
The judgment was passed in response to a Special Leave Petition (SLP) by Tata Motors to
stay distribution of land till the Calcutta HC has disposed of the main matters on
The Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act 2011. The Singur Land Rehabilitation
and Development Act 2011 held Tata Motors responsible for non-commissioning of the
plant and abandonment, and intends to take away the rights on the land without providing
a reasonable compensation. The SC order provides some relief to the company as the
West Bengal government will not be able to return the Singur land to the unwilling
farmer/owners until further orders are passed by the HC. Considering the urgency and
importance of the dispute, the SC has directed the HC to deliver its verdict within a month’s
time. We maintain our Buy view on Tata Motors with an SOTP target price of `1,456.
