Railway Budget Highlights
Following are the highlights of the Railway Budget 2011-12 presented by Railway Minister
Mamata Banerjee:
• Planned investment for railways is estimated at `57,630cr, up almost 40% from the current
year. Indian Railway Finance Corp. (IRFC) is budgeted to raise `20,594cr to fund the outlay,
while the private sector is expected to contribute `1,776cr.
• The budget has set aside `9,583cr for construction of new lines (1,300km). The budget
has also allocated `5,406cr for doubling the lines (867km), `2,470cr for gauge conversion
projects (1,017km) and `13,820cr for acquisition of rolling stock.
• For meeting railway requirements, a 700MW gas-based power plant is to be set up at
Thakurli in Maharashtra.
• No hike in passenger fare and freight rates has been made. Booking charges will be
cheaper with a charge of `10 for AC classes and `5 for others. Concession to senior citizens
has been increased from 30% to 40%.
• Passenger growth for 2011–12 is estimated at 6.4%.
• 18,000 new wagons to be procured during 2011–12.
• Freight tonnage is targeted at 993mn tonnes.
