The Indian equity market bounced back on Tuesday tracking positive European markets. Both Sensex and Nifty gained more than 0.70% each. Buying was seen in oil&gas, FMCG, healthcare and PSU stocks.
While the Sensex closed at 16859, up 154 points, the Nifty jumped 40 points to end the day at 5103.
Major gainers in the 30-share index were G A I L (India) (2.66%), Reliance Industries (2.58%), I T C (2.49%), Bharti Airtel (1.83%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.67%), and Cipla (1.51%).
Major losers were Sterlite Industries (India) (1.62%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.33%), Infosys Technologies (1.29%), Tata Power Company (1.14%), Jindal Steel & Power (0.37%) and Bajaj Auto (0.29%).
The Oil & Gas index jumped 2.17%. Major gainers were Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (6.36%), Indian Oil Corporation (3.46%), G A I L (India) (2.66%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (1.84%) and Gujarat State Petronet (0.31%).
The FMCG index was up 1.72%. Major gainers were I T C (2.49%), Nestle India (1.62%), Godrej Consumer Products (1.51%), Hindustan Unilever (0.68%) and Dabur India (0.28%).
The HC index gained 1.18%. Major gainers were Divis Laboratories (2.92%), Cipla (1.51%), Biocon (0.86%), Dr Reddy`s Laboratories (0.77%) and Glaxo SmithKline Pharmaceuticals (0.24%).
The IT index was down 0.06%. Major losers were Hexaware Technologies (2.46%), CORE Education and Technologies (1.52%) and Infosys (1.29%).
Major gainers in the mid–cap space were Anant Raj Industries (5.43%), Alstom Projects India (3.2%), Allcargo Logistics (2.6%), A B G Shipyard (2.26%) and Amtek India (2.13%).
Major gainers small caps were A B G Infralogistics (3.56%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (0.54%), Styrolution ABS (India) (0.47%), Trident (0.42%) and Aarti Industries (0.35%).
Globally, Asian indices ended on a lower note while European indices were trading in the green.
