Towards a strong finish
Moving briskly forward in positive territory, the rainfall has seen considerable improvement. Having covered 98.4% of its full season, the monsoon is entering its last week. The cumulative rainfall till the week ended September 21, 2011 further improved to~3.8% above its LPA from 2.7% above normal in earlier week.
While the number of divisions experiencing excess/normal rainfall improved to 33 from 32 in the earlier week, the number of regions experiencing scanty rainfall declined to 3 from 4 in the earlier week.
…. with higher rainfall in Rain dependent areas
Till the week ended September 21, 2011, cumulative rainfall in rain dependent areas further improved to 10.9% above normal. Though states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal region continued to receive above normal rainfall, states like Orissa, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana region reported 5-7% below normal rainfall for the season so far.
Reservoir levels at 87% of their FRL’s
The reservoir levels stand at 87% of their full reservoir level (FRL) as against 66% Long Period Average (LPA).
IMD forecast rainfall for eastern & northeastern states
Fairly widespread rain would likely to occur over eastern & north eastern states while rest of the country to witness decrease in rainfall.
Overall acreage improves; however acreage under Pulses and coarse cereals falls
Though acreage under major crops increased by 2.9% to 104mn hectare, crops like Pulses and Coarse cereals reported decline of 9.1% and 5.1% in acreage.
