Aviation sector update – January 2010
In January 2010, domestic passenger traffic recorded growth for the thirteenth consecutive
month, increasing by 20.7% yoy to 49.36lakh passengers, though witnessing a decline of
5.3% mom due to end of the tourist season.
SpiceJet witnessed strong growth of 40.9% yoy in domestic passenger traffic to 7.05lakh on
the back of fleet additions during the year and higher load factor. Other airlines’ figures
were as follows, Kingfisher (9.6lakh), IndiGo (9.5lakh), Jet Airways (8.5lakh) and Air
India (7.8lakh). SpiceJet, which is the fifth largest airline by passenger traffic, is expected to
overtake Air India in the coming months as it is expected to increase its fleet size in the
coming quarters.
The industry’s overall load factor registered a decline in January on mom basis, primarily
due end of tourist demand during the month. Kingfisher was the only airline that managed
to increase its load factor mom by 60bp, while Air India witnessed the highest decline of
950bp. Load factors for Kingfisher, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Jet Airways and Air India stood at 86.5
(85.9%), 88.6% (93.3%), 82.6% (87.8%), 73.9% (80.1%) and 69.3% (78.8%) respectively,
during the month.
The LCCs witnessed an increase in their market share mom primarily due to timely capacity
addition and taking full advantage of the burgeoning domestic demand. SpiceJet and Indigo
increased their market share further mom to 14.3% (13.8%) and 19.2% (18.6%),
respectively. Kingfisher was the only FCC to increase its market share mom to 19.5%
(18.6%), while Jet Airways including JetLite witnessed a decline in market share mom to
24.8% (25.4%), respectively. Air India also witnessed a decline in market share mom to
15.8% (17.1%), the highest decline amongst all airlines.
We continue to maintain our Neutral view on SpiceJet.
